Gail writes, “A few thoughts on mah jongg and old age…… I’m back from a brutal week in San Francisco. I went there to help and comfort my beloved friend and MJ player Roz, but at 88, widowed less than a month, living alone with severe dementia and crippling arthritis, she is unbelieveably obstinate, cranky, and resistant to all attempts to get routine care for her. BUT….. she is still a total shark at the MJ table! I kid you not, and MJ is one of the very few pleasures left to her. So I got to play with Reva on her 98th birthday, play several times with Roz, and think alot about how much my life has been enriched by my companions around the MJ table. By the way, Rozzie is the one who gave me mah jongg on the optional over pass 25 or so years ago.”
