NEW! MAH JONGG GIFTS!

I’m so excited – after spending a couple of years (!) working on some ideas, the time has finally come for me to share them with you. First I want to show you a few samples from the Mah Jongg Gift Collection which includes mugs, iPhone cases, and magnets, with other types of products to come in the future. All of these gifts show images of beautiful vintage Mah Jongg sets.

And then, on a slow boat from China (literally!) and due to arrive in the beginning of October, comes the vintage-inspired Mah Jongg Table Cover. As soon as they arrive I will have a link up on the blog to purchase them. I am thrilled about these table covers and hope you will be too! The table cover is secured to your card table with ties on all four corners that you tie into a bow around each leg.

Join author Ann Israel for a special presentation of her gorgeous book!

Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game is the first book to fully capture the story of the exotic and exciting game of Mag Jongg, offering an intimate look at the history of the game as well as the visual beauty of the tiles. When authors Ann Israel and Gregg Swain began playing Mah Jongg, they were unaware of the vintage collections that existed not only in the United States but also as far ranging as Africa to New Zealand. Slowly, they started to collect their own sets of Mah Jongg and as their collections grew, so did their appreciation of the history of, and interest in, the game.

Finding few references, Israel and Swain set out to create a book that chronicles the early beginnings of the game and documents Mah Jongg sets from the most basic, made simply of paper, to the most precious materials such as ivory and mother-of-pearl. Recognized and respected scholars and game experts have collaborated with Israel and Swain, contributing important chapters on the game’s history and its pieces as well as technical information on the tiles. Lastly, great collectors from around the globe have shared their incredible sets and memories for the first time in one book for everyone to enjoy.

With hundreds of beautiful new images by renowned photographer Michel Arnaud, and including historical documentation and ephemera, Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game fills the void between the past and today’s game, providing vision, inspiration and resources. Anyone who has ever been intrigued by a Mah Jongg tile will find in these pages visually stunning photographs that will entice them into becoming an enthusiast of the timeless game of Mah Jongg.

“I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Whether used as a reference or a beautiful keepsake, it’s a very worthy addition to the world of Mah Jongg.” —Ruth Unger, President, National Mah Jongg League

“What a great book … The many international manufacturers, the culture craze, and variations in decorative elements have all been pulled together by Ann Israel and Gregg Swain in a very readable and incredibly well-researched book that not only is chuck-full of useful information but laden with wonderful illustrations. Next time a set comes across my desk, I’ll not only know more about it, but can refer the owner to the definitive source for all Mah Jongg set knowledge.” —Lark Mason, Lark Mason Associates, Antiques Roadshow

“The perfect gift for the mah jongg maven in your life.” —Southern Jewish Life Magazine

WHAT A GREAT GIFT…AND A COUPLE OF SHOUT-OUTS FOR HELP!

Our dear friend Boots in Central California sent me the following email and photos:

“Hi Ann,
My friend who just learned to play and is a fab player just got this set from her brother. She figures it was her grandfather’s who passed away in 1946 in SF. We found a similar set on p. 21 in your book. We need 4 blanks to add to the extra 4 blanks that are with the set.”

Here’s today’s first shout out for help: If anyone has 4 orphans to match this set, these are the measurements (thanks to Donna and her husband!): the length of the tiles are approximately 1 and 3/16, the  thickness is 7/16, and the width is 13/16.

Now enjoy looking at this lovely – and well-preserved – bone and bamboo set from the 1920s by the Mah Jongg Sales Co. of America…

And here is Maggi, the proud recipient of this wonderful gift from her brother (and I note that she happens to be reading Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game!!!):image2

And now, one more shout-out for help – a while ago I posted a call out for Mah Jongg teachers in the Virginia Beach area. Jane just now saw the posting and sent the following email so, if anyone is looking for lessons in the VB area, let me know and I will connect you with Jane.

“Ann – Saw your post about someone wanting an American Mah Jongg teacher in Virginia Beach.  I didn’t see a date on the request and ….
1. I teach American Mah Jongg for the adult learning community where I live
2. Will be part-time living in the VB area within the month.
Too funny – I googled mah jongg Virginia Beach hoping to connect with some people to play with while I am there –
So if these people are still looking for a teacher, please connect us!
Thanks
jane”
