Recently I received a message from Valerie in upstate New York. I responded to her question by telling her that I didn’t think it would be a problem…but then I decided I would let all of you chime in. Please let me know your thoughts…

I, too, would like to know everyone’s thoughts. I haven’t been to a tournament yet, but I plan to soon!

There have been a number of responses – you can read the replies on the site. However, everyone did agree that there was no problem with using a marked-up card!

I wouldn’t think there would be a problem UNLESS she marked the card while play was in progress. I highlight Closed Hands at the beginning of the season (I still manage to expose at least one at the beginning of the playing year) and I mark hands as I make them so I can see how many I have made. I have used that card in tournaments and no one has ever commented.about it.

Thanks, Stuart. I agree! Ann

I see no problem with you marking your card. Players especially at a tournament should be watching the tiles on the table, not looking elsewhere.

I only mark my card for hands I make but I keep two. One for home (marked) and one for tournament (unmarked). It’s no ones business what hands I’ve made or not. Just my personal preference

Never heard of this being an issue at any national or local tournament.

the card is yours and you can do what you want with it, some tournaments require that you play with a card on the table

Hi Arlene – interesting that some tournaments have rules about where you must put the card.

Frankly, even most seasoned players mark their card when they complete a hand. I do not see any problem in a tournament or elsewhere playing with a card that has been marked!
