Well, that magic moment has finally arrived…the new National Mah Jongg League 2020 card arrived in my mailbox today – and, as I am every year at this time, I am so happy to see it. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of games happening right now in New York (and around the country) with us in lockdown or shelter-in-place. But we can always play on line or join a video conferencing  get-together like Zoom.

If your card has not arrived yet, do not fear – it is on its way!

So, study your new card and…ENJOY!

Hi all – and Happy New Year!!!

Believe it or not, it is time to place your order for your 2020 National Mah Jongg League card. Remember, the earlier you place your order, the sooner you will get your card when the mailings begin in late March/early April.

If you have followed my previous advice, you have saved your membership number (or look on the label of the NMJL newsletter that you recently received). Then, with membership number in hand, go to and click on the gray box that tells you to order your 2020 rule cards. It’s that easy! And, if you can’t find your membership number, not to worry! You can still buy your cards – it just is quicker and easier if you know your membership number. So, don’t delay – order your card right now!

happy new year

Yesterday I went to get my mail and there was an unexpected package waiting for me. I hadn’t ordered anything from Amazon that was due to arrive so I was mystified. It wasn’t my birthday – or even my half birthday – so I wasn’t expecting any gifts. As I opened the package I was happily surprised to find this inside:Wow! I am now the very proud owner of the limited edition Red and White Stripe Americana Mah Jongg set designed and created by our very own Mah Jongg Grand Master, Gladys Grad! Gladys is a Grand Master of American-Style Mah Jongg and the leader of the most marvelous Mah Jongg tournaments and Mah Jongg cruises. Gladys is also the creator and developer of Siamese Mah Jongg, the game that is sweeping the country. Her Mah Jongg Madness newsletter is always filled with news about our beloved game along with frequently asked questions to which only Gladys knows the definitive answers – and she always shares her knowledge with all of us! Without question, Gladys is my Mah Jongg idol! And now her dream of designing a wonderful Mah Jongg set has finally become a reality.

This limited edition set of red-striped tiles is made up of an Americana theme – the Dots are baseballs, the Bams are baseball bats and the Cracks are – what else? – firecrackers! The One Bam is an American eagle and we have buffalos roaming for both Red and Green Dragons.

But wait…where’s the White Dragon? Oh, there it is…of course – it is a diamond-shaped home base!

I also am in love with the Flowers – they are all the same – an American Red Rose – so it is easier for newer players to understand them.

      • Each set comes with a certificate of authenticity. Since it is a limited edition set that means that there are limited quantities (duh!). So, if you are a collector, or just want a fabulous new set that just happens to be designed by Gladys Grad, check it all out at

We love our game of Mah Jongg but we also love our winnings. And now there is a way to give back some of those winnings to all of those who suffer from the devastating disease of Alzheimer’s. This is a national fundraiser and I am happy to say that Mah Jongg groups all over the country are holding events in June to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. But we need more…won’t you include your group?

Join the Alzheimer’s Association’s The Longest Day Fundraiser through playing Mah Jongg and Mah Jongg for Memories.
Players will be helping fund care, support, and research for the over 5.8 million people in the United States who are living with this disease and other dementias, and the nearly 16 million caregivers.
In the month of June,  Mah Jongg groups across the country will be dedicating their regular play-days to the Alzheimer’s Association by making donations to the cause.  Also, other players will be holding more elaborate and larger day-long fundraising events.  Some will have lunch and silent auctions, while others will enjoy snacks and donate their day’s winnings.  All, however, will combine the fun and challenge of Mah Jongg with the objective of ending Alzheimer’s, the all-consuming disease that threatens the mental ability of every Mah Jongg player.
