The OMs (all except for our friend X) got together for our weekly luncheon and Mah Jongg Wednesday game. This was a day for me to remember because I declared Mah Jongg five times during the day – wow!
But first I had to suffer a little heartbreak! This was our very first game and here is my hand after the Charleston. Our table rules allow us to play “Atomic Hands” and I couldn’t believe my good luck. All I needed was one tile to declare Mah Jongg. And then what do you think happened…I picked up a Joker and that was the end of thinking I could go Atomic!
Quite a while ago I came upon the following essay. I don’t remember where I found it and I don’t know who wrote but I thought it would be nice to share it with you as we all are starting a new cycle of Mah Jongg with the 2014 NMJL card.
If anyone does know the origin of this piece, please let me know and I will credit the author in a future post.
In Mah Jongg, as in Life, we start with a set number of random tiles.
They line up on the rack before us, like DNA sequences and chance circumstance.
We begin to make sense of the randomness, to arrange bams together, or
notice number sequences. We make sense of what we’ve been given to start
with. We form our core “identity” and try to make sense of it.
I just received word that the NMJL has recalled all of their new 2014 Mah Jongg cards due to typographical errors…
My new 2014 NMJL cards finally arrived in yesterday’s mail – I opened my mailbox, saw the envelope from the NMJL and let out a big “whoop!” My neighbors in the mailroom must have thought I had just received a winning check from the Publisher’s Clearing House contest. But no, it was just my new card and I couldn’t have been happier. So now, I must go study it!!!
Did you receive your new 2014 card yet? Let me know if you did – or didn’t.
