MAH JONGG VS. IRMA…WHO DO YOU THINK WILL WIN?
Irma may have caused an unbelievable amount of pain and destruction but Mah Jongg players are tougher than any hurricane!
Even before the hurricane arrived, this is what our friend PJ saw out her window –But PJ and her MJ-playing friends were not about to abandon their game. The power flickered and then went off and so, a couple of hours before game time, the candles came out and PJ and friends were prepared to play a romantic candlelit game of Mah Jongg!
Fortunately, as PJ has told me, “we were very lucky to come through Irma’s “little” visit unscathed. Our power and water came back on around dinner time so that we did not have to play our weekly Mah Jongg game by candlelight! I might add, our hurricane shutters were still up and the four of us were beyond total exhaustion.”
But, as any devoted Mah Jongg player will attest, the game must go on!
IN MEMORY OF A SPECIAL FRIEND…
Last week I received a very sad message from Joanne Cusumano, the daughter of Phyllis Cusumano. Phyllis, who was known and loved far and wide, had finally succumbed to brain cancer.
Phyllis was my friend and, even though we had never met in person, we were frequently in contact by phone and email. Phyllis vowed that some day we would meet in person but that day never happened, which makes me very sad.
Phyllis was a beloved Mah Jongg teacher living in Naples, Florida. I would often receive messages from people in and around the Naples area, inquiring about Mah Jongg lessons. I always responded to their inquiries with a message letting them know that they were in luck as the best teacher in their area was Phyllis Cusumano and they should contact her immediately. Phyllis always called or wrote with a thank you and, more telling, I would usually receive a message from the students thanking me for introducing them to Phyllis and letting me know what an amazing teacher she was.
This world has lost a very special woman. I send my condolences to Joanne, her daughter, who now has Buddy, Phylis’s beloved dog.
There will be a mass for Phyllis on Monday, August 14 at 11am at Most Blessed Sacrament in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey and there will also be a service for her on November 13 at 10am at St. Williams Church in Naples.
Rest in peace, Phyllis, and hopefully there will be many Mah Jongg games for you up in heaven.

DRAGONS ON THE GREEN ARE BACK!
From the wonderful tournament directors, Judy and Bonnie, comes the newest information on their next fabulous event. To receive the registration form, or for questions, email either Bonnie Wise at bonniewise@live.com or call (813) 391-2459 OR Judy Serrapica at HayJude1959@gmail.com or call (813) 924-0199. Here is what they have to say about this next tournament along with some wonderful photos from their most recent event:
We are delighted to announce that we will be holding another Mah Jongg tournament on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Florida. This will be our 2nd tournament at Lone Palm and are thrilled to be going back. For those of you who attended our tournament there in October, you know what a lovely venue it is. You also know that is easily accessible from I-4. Just map it (800 Lone Palm Drive in Lakeland, Florida) and see how convenient the location is. Even our Pinellas friends commented that it was an easy drive. For our friends from the east, we are pleased to offer a venue that’s a little closer for you. And let’s be honest, isn’t it worth a little drive to play Mah Jongg, be with friends, and provide funds to support charity? We think it is.
Our tournament in July filled up very quickly, so please get your registrations in early. Please send $45 payable to Dragons on the Green Mah Jongg and mail to P.O. Box 725, Riverview, FL 33568 together with your lunch choice. Also note if you are willing to be a scorekeeper and bring a set.
As we’ve previously mentioned, we continue to look for venues around the Tampa Bay area so that we can provide various locations to meet your needs. We appreciate the suggestions you have had. We will also select a charity to feature at the August tournament. We have the recommendations that were previously provided, but please let us know if there are others you would like us to consider.
We hope that you can join us at Lone Palm Golf & Country Club on August 27, 2016 or at another tournament soon for Friends, Fun & Philanthropy!

YOU NEVER KNOW…
Judy and Bonnie have sent out the following message about their upcoming January 23rd tournament in Florida. If you are on a wait list, stay tuned – you never know!
Dear friends, Bonnie and I are back from our trip and couldn’t be more excited for our upcoming January 23, 2016 tournament at Seven Spring Golf & Country Club. When we left last week, we were almost sold out and upon our return, that was confirmed. We are overwhelmed by the responses and look forward to another successful tournament. If you sent in your check and space is available, you would have received an email confirmation from Bonnie. There are also some who have made arrangements to later send in payment. Those spaces have been reserved as well. However, for those of you who have not been in contact with us or have not received an email confirmation, we will put you on a waiting list. We always have spots that open up and will let you know immediately when that occurs. Judy and Bonnie
