THE HISTORY OF MAH JONGG SNACKS!

The wonderful Faye Scher shared a link from My Jewish Learning – this link took us to “The History of Mah Jongg Snacks” written by “The Nosher” (explained as a “blogging tour of all things Jewish food, recipes, and news, written by Shannon Sarna and other Jewish food lovers.”). If you have been a reader of this blog over the years then you know how important I think snacks are to our beloved game…and I suspect you will all enjoy this article.  Pass the licorice!screen-shot-2017-01-02-at-8-52-19-pmscreen-shot-2017-01-02-at-8-53-14-pmscreen-shot-2017-01-02-at-8-52-56-pmscreen-shot-2017-01-02-at-8-53-14-pmscreen-shot-2017-01-02-at-8-53-28-pmscreen-shot-2017-01-02-at-8-53-48-pmscreen-shot-2017-01-02-at-8-54-00-pmscreen-shot-2017-01-02-at-8-54-29-pmscreen-shot-2017-01-02-at-8-54-18-pmscreen-shot-2017-01-02-at-8-54-29-pmI had to laugh at the last paragraph in the article when Ivy Barsky observes, “food is a kind of fifth player.” So true!!!!

FOLLOWING HER BLISS…

Those of you who read this blog know that from time-to-time I write posts about Toby Salk and her Mah Jongg tournaments. I have never met Toby in person but, through our mutual love of Mah Jongg, we have become virtual friends. Recently a very inspirational article was written about Toby that told so much about her personality and spirit and I thought I would share it with you today. Enjoy!

MAH JONGG SECRETS, DIM SUM, AND MORE…

Jews_for_Dim_Sum545px

What’s going on at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco? Well, there’s some “noshing” happening at the Project Mah Jongg exhibit and there also is still plenty of time to see the show. Here’s something fun happening there on what they are calling “Third Thursdays” (Jul 17, Aug 21, Sep 18, Oct 16 | 6-7pm):

On Third Thursdays, Project Mah Jongg artist Imin Yeh, and artist and pastry chef Leah Rosenberg will share stories as they roll out a limited edition screen printed Mah Jongg snack box. The noshes inside will be inspired by retro 1950s snacks that women across America nibbled while playing Mah Jongg. Surprises like coins, temporary tattoos, and more also included. A different treat and box design will be offered each month. Visitors can also join Yeh in building a paper Mah Jongg set. Limited edition of 50 boxes for purchase per event.

That’s Imin and Leah in the photo above.

I just spoke with the very delightful Lynn Chorn, the new owner of the fantastic website, www.wherethewindsblow.com. She only has FOUR copies left of this wonderful souvenir book from the Project Mah Jongg exhibit. Lynn told me that she has contacted the publisher, 2wice Arts Foundation, but they have no more copies to sell. So, if you are interested in this special book – and at a very reduced price – contact Lynn right away because these books are going, going…gone soon!

CRAK BAM DOT REDUX

Yesterday I posted about Crak Bam Dot Mah Jonggthe fabulous catalogue from the Project Mah Jongg exhibit currently on view at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco. Several readers of this column alerted me to the fact that the museum is all sold out of this great souvenir book but that it is currently available on the wonderful website, WhereThe WindsBlow, and being sold for a steal of a price at $39.75, including shipping!

Much thanks to Diane G and Katie A, two great friends to this blog, who alerted me to this great sale!

CRAK BAM DOT MAH JONGG…

Recently I heard about a discussion concerning a book called Crak Bam Dot Mah Jongg by 2wice Arts Foundation that is up for sale on Amazon for around $160.  Suddenly I realized what book they were discussing – it is the catalogue sold in the bookstores/gift shops of the museums that have shown the exhibit, Project Mah Jongg.
