MAH JONGG WEDNESDAY RECIPES

The recipes for this Mah Jongg Wednesday with the OMs were easy and fun to make. The menu was Roasted Butternut Squash Soup with Condiments, Chicken Salad with Feta and Artichoke Hearts, and Yogurt Parfaits with Cherries and Pistachios.

MAH JONGG WEDNESDAY

My turn to host again and of course you all know how much I love to do this! It is always so much fun for me to have the OMs over for good food, great laughs, and lots of Mah Jongg. And yesterday was no different…

Lunch started out with Curried Butternut Squash Soup with Condiments (a Barefoot Contessa recipe, of course!)  followed by a basic chicken salad mixed with feta cheese and artichokes (as always, recipes and photos will follow tomorrow).

And then game play began! In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Mah Jongg set we used today was the Pink Ribbon/Breast Cancer set. We played today in memory of my mom who died from breast cancer so many years ago. This very special set came from Where the Winds Blow, in case you would like to have one, too. We all just love this set! Here is a photo of the pretty pink glitter tiles and the special Pink Ribbon Jokers that you order separately:

I AM SO EXCITED…

Well, I couldn’t be more excited – Eve Kahn, the antiques columnist for The New York Times, has written about our book, Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game – this article is in today’s issue of the newspaper – (scroll down to the section that starts with “The Game of Collecting”).

Although this article is long, I think you will love every word of it. It is from the July 1st, 2010 edition of Lilith Magazine (the wonderful feminist magazine). The first part of the article, Mah Jongg in the Lives of Jewish Women was written by Sarah Blustain and the second part, Tiles & Tribulations was written by Blustain and Dorothy Stern.

I will be interested to hear your comments, especially about Arthur Schwartz‘s remarks (actually, his mother’s theory) about why we play Mah Jongg and gaming in general.

Sit back and enjoy! Continue reading
