There is a fierce (some are calling it “historic”) storm – a Nor’easter – raging in New York right now. I was supposed to be speaking at the 92nd Street Y today but that has been rescheduled to Thursday, February 12th. I think we need some humor and some beauty in today’s posting so here it is – enjoy!

I received a message last week from our friend Diane after I posted a photo of S1’s dining room table festively decorated with tulips and thoughts of spring. I thought I would share Diane’s wonderful musings with you, especially for those of you suffering through this chilly winter…nothing like a flower to bring some warming thoughts of spring…

I enjoyed your blog today, especially the flowers. I think all mah jongg players love flowers; both tile flowers and garden flowers. With the sparkle and glow of Chanukah gelt and candles, I gave each of our Mah Jongg group an amaryllis bulb to plant. We had great fun comparing the progress of the growth of each, and had a great laugh over the one who planted hers upside down. That one was named “Corrigan” for “Wrong Way Corrigan” of past football fame. Others were named “Audrey III” (after the man-eating plant in Little Shop of Horrors”) Wimpy, Hope, Jack (for Jack in the Beanstalk), etc. The first to bloom received the  Golden Pot Award; a small flower pot painted gold and planted with a small succulent. She named it “Gilda”.

Now in the gray month of January, we are enjoying bright blossoms to cheer us. Like your tulips, we too are reminded that Spring will come.

As for The Game, last week we had a thrilling day. With several of us close to winning, the hostess picked up the last tile for a Mahj! Unbelievable!! It  goes to show, the game’s not over til the last tile has been played.

I just thought you might enjoy this.

I just heard again from Diane  who added this message, which made me laugh out loud:

The amaryllis name that I forgot to mention was Seymour. I was notified today that he is just beginning to bloom. I didn’t name that one. One of our group named it. Mine is Wimpy for being so slow to get started. It is also the shortest one. There is more to the story of Seymour. He was very slow to grow. Then the husband cut himself shaving, and dropped a few drops of blood into the plant. It grew 2″ overnight. Ha! Talk about laughs.
I am sure you have seen “Little Shop of Horrors” and can appreciate these crazy stories.
Thanks again for all  you do for the mahj world.

Thanks to Diane for sharing all of this – it is too good!

Finally…for the first time in 2015 I am back together again with the OMs…well, at least some of them. K is on a cruise in the Mediterranean celebrating her mom’s 95th birthday (it is so cold here – her mother could not have picked a better time to have a birthday!) and X was not feeling well. But the rest of us gathered at S1’s and had a really great day.

I know I have posted this before but S1’s table cover is so darling!

The first game went to S2 with this LIKE NUMBERS hand of FFFF 1111 11 1111.

And then it was time for lunch, which was really so yummy and perfect for this bone-chilling day: a delicious Shepherd’s Pie courtesy of Fresh Direct, beets, and a fabulous salad. And, of course, a lovely table setting with a vase of tulips to remind us that some day there really will be spring!

After the wonderful lunch we quickly moved back to the game table where I was lucky to pick my own tile for Mah Jongg with a 369 hand of 333 666 6666 9999.

Then S1 chimed in with another LIKE NUMBERS hand – FFFF 1111 11 1111.

After several disappointing wall games, J brought in a win with a CONSECUTIVE RUN hand of FFFF 1111 2222 DD.

This ended up not being a winning hand but here is what my rack looked like after the Charleston. I thought for sure that I would be able to declare Mah Jongg with the closed 369 hand of 333 6 999 333 6 999 but the tiles just never fell my way.

Instead, J whooshed in and declared another win with a favorite WINDS – DRAGONS hand of NNNN EEEE WWWW SS.

The next two games were mine, first with a 2468 hand of 22 44 444 666 8888

…and then with lots of lucky Jokers coming my way for this CONSECUTIVE RUN hand that I thought was really fun to play: 11 22 111 222 3333.

S2 had a beautiful win from the WINDS – DRAGONS hand of FFFF EEEE GG WWWW

..and S1 won with the similar other WINDS – DRAGONS hand of FFFF NNNN RR SSSS.

And, for the grand finale, S2 finished the day with a Jokerless and perfectly played 2014 hand of NNNN EW SSSS 2014.

A perfect day and a perfect way to spend the day indoors, safe from this bone-chilling cold!

Yesterday was Mah Jongg Wednesday for the OMs and S1 hosted – beautifully, as always. And although I didn’t stay for the entire afternoon, I must say that I was very, very lucky. I played 4 games and had Mah Jongg 4 times! WOW!! S2 is out west and so D joined us, which is always a delight.

Here are some pictures of my winning hands:

I actually didn’t think I would ever get to Mah Jongg with this hand because with the BBB exposure, I had a feeling the 1Bam would not get thrown – and besides, there already was one out there and I was playing a risky game hoping to get a pair. IMG_1565BTW, this is S1’s newest acquisition – a magnificent bone and bamboo set that she purchased from X. It is truly beautiful with the most unusual and gorgeous 9 Dots – I hope I have a picture of those 9 Dots to show you…
